My husband and I are considering buying a refurbished vacation home in Ascoli Piceno area.  We are not familiar with the real estate market.  I have seen in some of the comments that you should offer substantially less then the asking price on a home that needs to be refurbished.  Would this apply to a home that has already had the work done? The real estate agent said to anticipate about 10% above the selling cost in closing expenses.
Thanks for your help,
Lynda

Hello,
While searching the internet for Spelonga in the Marche i came across your site and thought I would post a message. Both of my parents and older sister were born in Spelonga. My father Luigi Pichini made many trips from Spelonga to Pennsylvania from 1906 until my mother and sister came to America in 1934. My father worked in a stone quarry and was killed in a accident in the quarry in 1944 when i was 8 years old my mother would tell me and my 2 sisters of Spelonga and i was too young to appreciate them.
My mother died in 1964 and all i was left with was memories.
In 1982 the Italian club in Hershey planned a trip to Italy. I had my cousins address that my mother left us i had a friend write a letter in Italian to let them know when i would be in Rome they lived in Ostia.
When we got to Rome and finally met them they told us that had been to the airport for the last 2 days looking for us. They made us feel like their own family and treated us very kindly.
When they took us to Spelonga and i met my father's brother daughter Raffella Pichini. I felt like i was in heaven.
My wife and i have been back to Spelonga 8 more times since then for the festa bella.
The festa is an experience that is in my heart every day. 2 of my sons and my 2 grandsons and my daughter have visited Spelonga. Some friends of mine from the area where i live have toured Italy and met with us in Spelonga during the festa. it is an experience that cannot be described but if you go to the festa one time you will want to return to see it again.
This year 2007 i was not able to go to the festa because i had back surgery on June 19th and need some time to heal. My son and grandsons are already planning to go to the festa in 2010 The festa is GREAT.
Thanks for listening to me.

We are a large family (5 children) and we are currently renting an apartment just outside Loro Piceno, Le Marche. We are looking now to rent a house (with garden) long term (at least a year) again in this area as the children attend the local school.

Thank you, Leanne Young.

We are completing on a property not far from San Ginesio early October and coming out at the end of September to check-out furniture/wood burning stoves.  Can anyone advise where to buy a bed (not Ikia).  Looking for traditional, rather than modern.  Not sure about antiques in the area - wardrobes/cupboards.  Do they exist/are they expensive compared to France?
Appreciated.
Michael.

I am planning a trip to my father's birthplace in Pretare this fall. I will probably land in Milan or Rome. What is the easiest way to get to Ascoli from there. Train? Where in Ascoli can I rent a car to drive on to Pretare? Any advice on the best means of transportation and hotels in Ascoli or Pretare would be appreciated. Grazie,

I have a house in Le Marche. As a lone woman I was very careful about contractors etc. I was VERY fortunate to have a good agent and an excellent Geometra and builders. So please do not despair they are some good ones, more so than in England. However my problem is knowing or finding out where all the Festas are held and when. I have stumbled across some and made dates in next years diary. Does anyone know of a publication or a list? Approx dates are fine. Also about Antique fairs. As a keen collector I would like to know where they are and when. I did find the yearly one at Grottamare.
On another silly note which washing powder is equivalent or as near as possible to Fairy snow Non Biological, and what is the Italian equivalent to Calgon? I don't know about anyone else but I could do with a list of products etc to help me find my way round.
Thanks. Trisha Sanders

Hello: I would like to visit the Ascoli Piceno area, in July. I would appreciate any advice on getting around...not sure if I would need to rent a car. Is there a local bus or taxi service to get there from the Ancona or Pescara airport, and to visit places in the area?
Thank you!
Mike

Hello,
We are traveling out to Le Marche in July to look at the area with a view to purchasing a holiday home to turn into a family home in the long term. Having read some of the comments on your guest book we are very alarmed at the steep hike in restoration costs from the original quote (although we obviously would expect some small increase) such as 60% quoted by one of your readers. We have also looked at information that suggests that restoration from ruin to finished article is for the naive or the rich, which brings me to my question: Some estate agencies offer the option of buying a property that is owned by a friendly/pet developer and will be completed within six months of the purchase at a fixed and agreed price - can we rely on this as gospel or is it to be taken with a pinch of salt?

Nicole.

Hi
I have a holiday home in Le Marche, near to Montefalcone that I am renting out this Summer. I need to get together some information about what types of activities people can do - leaflets, brochures etc to put in the house. Has anyone got any suggestions? I know there are a lot of things to do - it's just finding them! Thanks!

I've recently completed a restoration project in Marche managed by a local geometra. The cost, excluding "extras" is over 60% of the estimate 2 years ago. I budgeted 15% over and am really stuck. He just says prices have risen and won't negotiate.
Please give me some suggestions of how to proceed.

Could anyone help us. We are moving to Le Marche in 3 months and we are looking for a place to rent. We have enquired with several estate agents but they seem to handle either holiday rentals or sales but not long term lets. We need a 3 or 4 bed place with a garden. Will pay up to 1000 euros a month. We are coming to visit and look in a couple of weeks any pointers would be hugely appreciated.

Robert.

we are relocating to le Marche in May and I am looking for reasonably priced housing and also would like to know about schools in the Ascoli Piceno province, we would like to live with a mountain view, a couple of acres and a partly restored house would be fine, preferably just outside a village so our 11 and 3 yr old will have friends, any info about schools etc. will be gratefully received.

Anyone interested in doing a Summer house swap? We offer spacious 16th Century 4-bed village house with beautiful walled garden perfect for children to play safely. We are well-located between London and Cambridge and very handy for Stansted Airport.
We are looking for a house in Le Marche region ideally with swimming pool or close to beaches.

We will be staying at our house in Le Marche again in April and would like to go to the antiques market at Ascoli Piceno which is usually the 3rd Sunday of each month we believe.  As the 3rd Sunday in April is actually Easter Sunday does anyone know if it will still be on?

My father Arturo Caponi was born in Pretare in 1891. I have written a book:
Arthur and Rose
The Caponi/Mosca Union
October 21, 1915
In search of my Italian Roots
Ernest S. Caponi, p.e.
Ninth Child Fifth Son

The book takes readers on a journey which began in 1997. it includes trips to Abruzzo and Le Marche in search of documents of birth, marriage and death which tell about Arturo and Rosa as well as their ancestors.

The theme of the book is a "how i did it approach" to genealogy research of anyone with interest in immigrants from Italy. The book contains about 400 pages of narrative and documents. it is expected to be available by the end of this year (2006).

I would be honored to be invited to present the book to the membership of any social organization. as a former college professor I yearn to be in the classroom again.            caponi21833-at-hotmail.com
